This Is Africa. This is what everyone says everytime something goes wrong or not according to plan. A jackal sneaks into your tent and steals chocolate out of your backpack (actually happened to a couple in the group)? TIA. No showers or bathrooms at the campsite? TIA. Three pounds of sand blows into your tent in the middle of the Namibian Desert? TIA. You get the picture....
Despite the fact that these and many many other situations like these seem like inconveniences, I can't get enough of this place. Every single day is full of some new, fantastic, out-of-this-world experience.
A few days ago we hiked up an enormously high and difficult sand dune to watch the sunrise. Nothing but sand dunes for miles and miles in every direction and there we were, just sitting atop one of them in the middle of it all. We've wandered around the desert with bushmen and learned about tracking animals, how to know which creatures you can eat to stay alive, and what to do if confronted with a lion. Sometimes, while we are eating dinner around the campfire, someone from the local tribe will come speak to us about life in their village. A few days ago we went sandboarding on the dunes, going 72 k's an hour and swallowing mouthfulls of sand. Today we are heading to Etosha National Park where we will spend our time on game walks and drives and apparently, cuddle up to some baby cheetahs. So yeah, I'm one happy camper.
Hoping I can get to a computer soon to upload some pictures. Happy almost 4th of July! xo
